Rotorua International Stadium was abuzz with excited fans and the swishing of waving flags as league fans gathered to cheer on the Warriors.

Hats, sunglasses, and water bottles were popular accessories on a day when the mercury hit 25C.

Despite the heat, about 5500 fans gathered to watch the Warriors beat the Melbourne Storm 20-14 in a pre-season trial.

The stadium was transformed into something of a festival atmosphere, with bouncy castles, picnic blankets, and plenty of tunes to keep the crowd happy during the breaks.

It was also a chance for fans to check out some of the team's new signings, with many big name players not taking to the field.

Jaxson Matthews, 10, was looking forward to a "great" game.

"I'm a big Warriors fan," he said, decked out in the team's merchandise.

"Hopefully we win."

Dennis Beazley had travelled from Hamilton with wife Karen to watch the game.

It wasn't the first time for the pair, who had seen the team play in both New Zealand and Australia "many times".

"We're going to kick a**," a confident Mr Beazley predicted before the game.

Once the game kicked off, the only thing louder than the big hits on the field were the cheers from the stands - which often went hand in hand.
