Apple surprised its customers last week at its launch with the supposed free gift. Apple CEO Tim Cook called it the "biggest album launch of all time" but it's quickly turning into their biggest headache of all time.
According to Digiday, Twitter reactions to the move have ranged "from befuddlement to indignation, with some users comparing it to being molested or invaded".
On Monday, it was reported that one of the top Google searches was "how to remove U2 album". Was it because people felt they had been violated, or because U2 just aren't cool any more?
Either way, it's cost Apple at least $100 million for starters - that's the figure alleged to have been the dealbreaker for the band.
Apple is still reeling from the security breach of its iCloud so allowing something to break into an individual's cloud shows they either didn't think this through or they are happy to break the privacy rules when it suits them.
I can't say that I'm happy about receiving it (I lost touch with U2 after Achtung Baby), but at least it doesn't automatically appear in my iPod playlist so I can ignore it for the time being.
• Also hitting our social media feeds this week are our politicians and wannabes as they go all out for election glory. This year's election has been the first where I've seen social media being used in full force.
Videos, hashtags and campaign pages are filling our feeds and, if it's not the actual candidates, it's anyone with a political view.
If you're still to decide who to vote for, instead of choosing based on social media presence (because let's face it, some are more savvy than others), head on over to www.onthefence.co.nz and see which party your views are most aligned to.
I was already pretty certain and it confirmed my beliefs.
