Tackling burglary is a constant focus for the Rotorua police. A lot of effort is placed on reducing burglaries, including having one work group totally focused on this type of crime.
In the early 90s it was not uncommon to have up to 70 or 80 burglaries reported in a week in Rotorua. So far this year we are averaging between 20 to 25 burglaries per week. This is a terrific reduction from years ago, but something we can still improve upon.
Here are some some simple tips to reduce the chances of burglary.
Don't leave your electrical items in full view of a potential thief. If you are away from home, place these items away in draw, wardrobe or where ever they can't be seen. Don't leave your laptop screen open and glowing at night while the rest of the house is in darkness! You might as well put a sign on your front lawn saying "pick me"!
Use the Selecta DNA marking system to mark your expensive items. Record serial numbers of electrical goods.
Get to know your neighbours and look out for each other.
Lock your doors and close windows when you are away or asleep in your house.
Fit a burglar alarm, and fit sensor lights.
And if you see something suspicious then call 111. We love receiving calls of suspicious behaviour. The police can't be everywhere at once and we rely upon the public to let us know what is going on so we can apprehend offenders.
