A 6.5 magnitude earthquake, centred 30km west of Taupo, went pretty much unfelt around the town.
A preliminary report from GNS science shows the earthquake struck at 3.36pm yesterday at a focal depth of 150km.
Despite reports of the quake being felt in Hawke's Bay, Wellington and Christchurch, many residents The Daily Post spoke to didn't feel a thing.
Haydn Wood was in the pools with his family at AC Baths at the time of the tremor, and said they only knew of the quake when he started to get calls from worried family members outside Taupo.
"We were in the pools then all of a sudden I got a call from my sister in Auckland asking if we were ok. Then I got a call from my brother-in-law in Napier who felt it himself so was calling to see if we felt it, but I said to both, 'didn't feel a thing'."
Another local, Jacqui Pepper, said she also didn't feel anything, but heard the impact of it.
"I heard the crash and thought it was an animal inside my garage, but it was the shelves all over the floor," she said.
Many took to the paper's Facebook page after it was asked if anyone felt the quake.
Angela Manaena said: "When? I didn't feel anything, scary!"
Kristyl Eru said: "Nope didn't feel a thing."
However there were some that said they did feel it.
Ann Kiwigirl said: "I felt it. My blinds were swaying."
Andrea Colledge said: "Yup but I wasn't sure until I checked geonet. I felt dizzy ... then spotted the lights swaying."
Taupo emergency manager Phil Parker said he felt the quake, but that there had been no reports of damage from it and he doesn't expect any to come along.
Taupo Police acting Senior Sergeant Greg Weston said they also have had no reports of damage so far, but had taken calls from interested media.
