A car on fire in Kaingaroa Forest Village this morning is being treated as suspicious.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said Kaingaroa fire station responded to a call at 8.15am about a fire on Dun Rd near Daniel St and Middle Rd.

It initially took firefighters "a while" to find the blaze behind a premises as no specific instructions were given, the spokesman said.

Kaingaroa Fire Brigade officer in charge Ken Austin said it was a initially deemed to be a bush fire but was found to be a car.

One fire appliance attended the scene.

The blaze has been completely extinguished and the case passed onto police.

A police spokeswoman confirmed police had been notified about a suspicious fire and were called to the scene at 10.30am.

She said no one has been arrested or charged but inquiries were ongoing.
