"We are definitely going in as underdogs, without a doubt, but I feel like we'll surprise them," said Robinson.
They have set themselves the goal of cracking the top 10 next year.
"We have nothing to lose and a lot to gain because playing teams like that we come away with so many more ideas on how we can improve our game.
"If we win a couple of games along the way that's mint, that's what we're there for, but otherwise we'll learn a lot from it for next year."
They will travel twice to Palmerston North and once to Auckland and Wellington for games during the championship.
This weekend the Steam Rollers are holding their annual Slam Rock event for the fourth time, with proceeds going towards the travel costs involved in the championship.
"Slam Rock is our biggest annual fundraising event and we are playing Hamilton this year at Sportsdrome Rotorua.
"The teams roll out under spotlights, we have a mirror ball and a big projector screen for the scoreboard - it's definitely quite large compared to other roller derby events in the country," said Robinson.
The sport, which was often referred to as rugby on skates, was great for spectators, she said.
"It's pretty exhilarating because of the pace and physicality of the game.
"There's a lot of hard hits which are crowd pleasers."
Slam Rock is being held on Saturday from 6pm. For more information go to steamrollers.co.nz.
