The last two weeks of term 3 saw senior outdoor education classes from Tarawera High School hitting the tracks in the Whirinaki Forest.
Testing out a new route this year, the Year 13 class planned a trip that started at Plateau Rd end and made their way to Central Whirinaki Hut then on to Upper Whirinaki Hut and back to the road end.
Throughout the three days they worked on navigation skills, trip leading and survival skills. They even tested their creative and innovative skills by making emergency shelters, which they then experienced sleeping in for a night.
Some students completing their Duke of Edinburgh award took part in the same trip, along with Year 11 and 12 students who completed this loop one week after the Year 13 group.
Many marshmallows were roasted and cups of hot milo were had over the two trips.
