Rotorua SPCA's proposed cat quarantine is one step closer to becoming a reality after a fundraising quiz night.
More than 200 people crammed into the Rotorua Citizens Club on Thursday for a brain-draining event.
The winning team was Five Go To Dorset, comprising The Daily Post editor Kim Gillespie, his parents Lynn and Brian Gillespie and friends Sheryl Hewitson and Wendy Allen.
Rotorua SPCA manager Nicola Martin said she was amazed with the response to the event.
"We were a bit shocked but very pleased with the turnout. People know we're doing our best and want to help us."
She said the quiz night organisers were still counting the money raised but expected the total to reach about $2000. The money was raised from a $10 per person entry fee and auctions.
"It's a really great start to our fundraising. It was quite a fun event, a lot of work but that's okay. We hope everyone had a great time."
The quiz competition consisted of eight rounds of questions. Ms Martin was one of the markers and said there were some interesting answers offered up by the 30 teams, "some out of the box, some unable to be repeated".
"We would love to have another event shortly but we're just going to take a breath first."
She said the focus now was on this weekend's relocation sale. The Old Taupo Rd shelter is undergoing some building work and the SPCA is trying to rehome as many of its animals as possible.
All normal adoption criteria apply but cats, kittens, dogs and puppies are now half price. Cats are $40, kittens $45, and all canines $95.
They have all been desexed, had at least one vaccination, been wormed and flea treated and dogs have been micro-chipped. Ms Martin said the value of this veterinary work varied from $100 to $300.
