Kiwi music is being celebrated in a unique way this New Zealand Music Month, with musicians performing in gondolas going up Mt Ngongotaha.

Jamie McDell, Savage, Strangely Arousing and Auckland band the Hipstamatics are among those who will feature in videos performing music overlooking Rotorua at Skyline Rotorua.

The first Gondola Gigs video, with rapper Savage, will be released today.

Nine videos will be made available this month.

Hipstamatics lead singer Dillon Riesterer said the group performed their song Soul Music in the gondola.

He said the videos were a unique way to promote their original music.

"Overall it was great, we had a great time down there. The gondolas were awesome ... it was one of the most unusual places we have played.

"We are hoping a few people will see the video."

Strangely Arousing trombonist and backing vocalist Liam Rolfe said the group of five had enjoyed the experience.

"It was really interesting. We were like 'how are we going to fit in there', but we did and it was quite cosy."

They even took three pieces of a drum kit into the gondola, he said.

"It actually sounded way better than I thought it would, the acoustics in there were a lot better."

Skyline Rotorua sales and marketing manager David Blackmore said the Gondola Gig videos were an engaging way to promote New Zealand music and to celebrate 30 years of gondola rides.

"Skyline's gondolas are an iconic attraction and the challenge of performing in such a small space creates a cool new way to celebrate New Zealand music."
