If you're looking for a fun night out the whole family can enjoy, look no further than John Paul College's production Beauty and the Beast.

Production manager Candice Visser said she could not wait to see the story brought to life.

"It's a really magical story that draws on the classic boy meets girl tale, but with a bit of a twist. We chose Beauty and the Beast because it has a really good message for younger children about beauty being within."

Ms Visser said the show would not be your "typical school production".

"The talent and professionalism of the students has just blown me away. When you're watching it, you would never think you were watching students in a school production."

She said the production would suit all ages, with princes and princesses for the younger audience and adult humour for their parents.

"It's still a story you can enjoy as an adult because there is lots of adult humour that goes over the heads of children."

Ms Visser said the costumes, made by Weta Workshop in Christchurch, would be "the big draw".

"They are honestly so fantastic, if I wasn't able to get these costumes I would have chosen another production as they are really the big draw.

"It has been a humbling experience bringing this production together and, after seeing the dedication of the students, I really hope they get a full house."

The show is opening tonight and is running until May 16. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster at the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre or online at www.ticketmaster.co.nz.

There will be six evening performances, starting at 8pm and two matinee performances, one on Sunday at 2pm and one on Tuesday at 2pm.
