A large scrub fire which tore through farmland and engulfed three buildings in Maraenui near Ōpōtiki has been extinguished.
Firefighters from Whakatāne, Edgecumbe, Ōhope, Ōpōtiki and Waihau Bay battled the blaze which was 200m by 50m on a farm off State Highway 35 near Ohupoto Rd.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said there were 11 fire crews including water tankers battling the blaze that started about 2.40pm yesterday.
A hay barn, an implement shed and a cow shed had all caught fire too.
The fire was extinguished about 5.30pm but some crews were at the scene this morning keeping an eye on things, he said.
