Rugby: Player suffers cuts after fight

A rugby player was taken to hospital after a fight involving another player left him cut and bleeding.

A rugby player was taken to hospital with cuts to his leg after a fight involving a broken window, after a game in Taupo.

The fight broke out on Saturday afternoon at Owen Delany Park, following a club match between Waitomo and Taupo Sports, which Waitomo won 22-13.

The two teams were entering the changing rooms after the game when the fight started, according to the King Country Rugby Union.

Police and the rugby union are investigating the incident, which involved a player from either team.

Bay of Plenty police communications manager Kim Perks said a window was broken during the incident, which caused the leg injury to one of the players.

She said another person, who was not involved in the fight, also had to be taken to hospital with cuts to an arm.

Ms Perks said police had not made any arrests or laid any charges at this stage but they had spoken to one of the players involved.

King Country Rugby Union general manager Susan Youngman said an investigation for player misconduct was under way.

"The consequences of this incident are very shocking and upsetting for both clubs, our volunteers, supporters, staff and players," she said.

"There is absolutely no place for this type of behaviour in rugby, on or off the field, and it won't be tolerated.

"Misconduct complaints have been filed against the two players involved in the altercation and the union's judicial officer will have the power to suspend one or both of them from playing, pending the findings of the judiciary."

It was reported an ambulance attended the sports ground and treated and transported two people to Taupo Hospital.
