Two minutes' silence was observed at the Arawa War Memorial in Government Gardens at 11am yesterday - the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011.
It marked the 93rd anniversary of Armistice Day, the day that commemorates the end of World War I.
The remembrance service was organised by the Rotorua Returned Services Association and among those in attendance was Ex-Navy serviceman George Wilkinson.
He said although none of the World War I veterans was alive, the events were celebrations.
"It's like funerals these days - they're now a celebration. Here we are celebrating the life of those guys."
