Rotorua schools in the medals at Aims Games

Rotorua schools are celebrating their successes at last week's AIMS Games.

The 2018 full results for the week-long games show Rotorua schools won one gold, silver and bronze medal.

Mokoia Intermediate school pupil Milla Phipps won the Year 8 girls multisport event.

Milla finished in 30 minutes 47 seconds, just six seconds ahead of the second place finisher. She ran 2.4km in 8m 48sec, mountain biked 3.8km in 13m 22sec and kayaked 1km in a little less than 8 minutes.

John Paul College took home one silver and one bronze medal.

Their futsal team was second and Year 7 pupil Nathan Clapperton was third in rock climbing for his age group.

Futsal coach Mark Chapman said the games were a great opportunity for Rotorua schools.

"It's really good for kids to challenge themselves outside the area, to play with bigger schools and test their skills is a real challenge.

"The prestige of the tournament is a benchmark."

Chapman said the futsal team was aiming to be in the top 16 of the 45 teams entered in the games.

"The boys just stepped up and we went to the quarter-final, then we won the semifinal on penalties."

Chapman said the players were "super stoked" with the result and they had stepped up at the games.

"We're not necessarily the most talented team there but we got stuck in and worked really hard."

The AIMS Games ran from September 9 to 14 in Tauranga and saw close to 11,000 young athletes compete in 22 sporting codes from indoor bowls and cross-country, to rock climbing, rugby sevens, hockey and more.

The full results don't break down swimming by stroke, instead summing up the winners by overall points.
