Rotorua Lakes High School took out first place in the open division in last night's Stage Challenge at the Energy Events Centre.
Their performance, Discrimination is Not Over Yet, pivoted around society's perception and attitude towards homosexuals and how it has evolved over the years.
They covered society's negative reactiontoward homosexuals as well as those who supported them against the adversity. The end of the performance touched on the ideal that support is the key to change.
Kawerau's Tarawera High School won first place in the raw division of the competition with their stunning performance titled The Ache of the Heart.
Event manager, Olivia Kinane said Rotorua Lakes High School's superb level of detail in their production elevated the piece and added to their touching story.
"They presented equality in a colourful and entertaining way that displayed the level of diversity in our society."
Design judge, Debbie Rowles said Rotorua Lakes High School's performance was "quite emotional at the end".
Thacia Van Arendonk, the performance judge for the evening, said the performance "brought a tear to my eye" saying it was a "beautiful portrayal of such an important message".
Tarawera High School took the stage to shed light on the high suicide levels among Maori. They highlighted the disconnection to the Maori culture that many felt as the reason behind the high suicide rates in a passionate display of creativity.
"Tarawera High School wowed the raw division competition with their performance," said Ms Kinane.
"Their touching piece brought forward a difficult topic for many and highlighted the issues in a poetic and beautiful way.
"A really moving concept and a very sad statistic for our country, good on you for bringing a very heavy message into the light," said production judge Molly Chattell.
Ms Kinane said Rotorua put on a fantastic night where all the schools showcased their creativity and innovation.
"You can see all the hard work and determination that goes into their performances. Tonight's show reflects how Stage Challenge and J Rock is a great pathway for youth to creatively express themselves and their values in a safe and healthy way."
