Children from ABC Monokia have been exploring sustainability and local culture in the community.
Teacher Fazeema Ciuccariello said a group of children from the Fairy Springs day care centre were fortunate enough to have a tour of Te Puia recently.
"They explained to us the different items that were weaved from flax; we even got to see the kiwi bird. The highlight of the trip was cooking our kai in the thermal pools."
Te Puia had provided many opportunities for the children to learn and engage in experiences relating to the rich history of New Zealand and the people of Rotorua, Mrs Ciuccariello said.
The centre has also been fostering children's understanding of where vegetables come from by focusing on sustainability, specifically growing flowers, plants, herbs, fruits and vegetables as well as utilising the 3 Rs - recycle, reduce, reuse.
