About 50 passionate water quality supporters held signs and chanted at a Save Our Water Rally in Rotorua today.
After the rally - one of many held around the country outside local council officers - they met with Rotorua Lakes Council representatives for a question and answer session.
The rallies, which aimed to bring attention to issues regarding water quality, and the bottling of water in New Zealand, was organised by New Zealand water forum - Bung the Bore.
One of the Rotorua organisers, Wiki Royal, said in regard to the Government's plan to have 90 per cent of rivers and lakes in New Zealand swimmable by 2040, he wanted to know what happened in the meantime.
"We have to take action now. Rotorua is known for its pristine lakes but we can't swim in Lake Rotorua. This is for our kids and our future."
Supporters met in front of the Sir Howard Morrison Convention Centre and then moved to the Rotorua Lakes Council building where council representatives answered questions and concerns.
Council environmental scientist Alison Lowe spoke to those gathered, alongside water planning manager Greg Menzano and transport and waste and water solutions director Stavros Michael.
Ms Lowe said the council and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council were committed to improving the quality of Rotorua's streams and lakes, and there was an investigation into the weekend's wastewater treatment plant overflow into Puarenga Stream.
