Hundreds turned out for the walk

Pink cupcakes, trucks and flowers were among the sea of brightly-adorned people participating in a fun walk for a good cause this evening.

Everyone taking part in the annual Pink Walk in support of the Rotorua Breast Cancer Trust had something in common, trust chairwoman Sarah Davies said.

"I would think every single person would know at least one person affected. Whether it's breast cancer or cancer as a whole.

"It's a pretty staggering number."

About 700 people pre-registered for the 3.4km walk, which winds its way around the Lakefront and Government Gardens, and hundreds more registered at the event.

The event featured live entertainment, food vendors and activities at the Village Green from 4.30pm in the build-up to the walk which started at 6pm.

The trust was aiming to raise between $12,000 and $15,000 through the event. Last year it raised about $10,000.

Davies said the event was special because all proceeds helped Rotorua specifically.

"Every cent we raise is given back to the Rotorua community.

"People often support nationally as well but this is very personal to Rotorua."

She said the same local businesses donated to the cause each year.

Local woman Ally Edwards said she had participated in the Pink Walk because breast cancer affected a lot of women.

"I know some friends affected by it. It's showing support and showing we mean business."

First time attendee Rose Andrew said she had always wanted to attend the event.

"I'm meeting some friends that have lost their mum so I'm here to support them."

Wendy Falconer comes annually.

"I've had relatives that have had breast cancer and it's my way of supporting them.

"Getting breast cancer is a possibility for all of us women. We have to support each other."

She said the event was a good way to bring everyone together to support the breast cancer trust.

"Suddenly quite quiet people are in these loud outfits saying we're all with you."

Donations can still be made to the trust at rotoruabreastcancertrust.co.nz.
