Rotorua mum aims for Miss Diversity title

A Rotorua mother is embracing her culture as she vies to take the title of Miss Diversity International.

Hannah Paul is a finalist with 11 others in the pageant next week.

The event aims to celebrate women from various ethnic backgrounds and promote diversity in society.

The 25-year-old said she was proud to have the opportunity to represent her hometown.

"I had an opportunity to travel overseas a few years ago as part of another competition but wasn't able to make it, so when this came along I jumped at it," Ms Paul said.

"I just want people to know that I'm from Rotorua and that a lot of positive things can come from our town. I also have two sons, so I wanted to really do it for them, my family and my hometown, so they can be proud of me."

Ms Paul has some modelling and promotional experience and will take the stage at a gala event next Saturday, held at the Town Hall in Auckland. Categories include traditional costume, evening wear and traditional beach wear.

An interviewing session was held before a panel of judges earlier this month, where she was quizzed on issues including her hobbies, being involved in a multicultural event and being the only Maori in the competition.

"I was nervous but I did my best to sell myself and convince the judges, and how happy and honoured I would be to bring home the crown," she said.

The winner will receive the title of Miss Diversity International and be named alongside a male counterpart on Saturday. They will have the opportunity to travel overseas to take part in international competitions.
