The Rotorua-based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to provide medical assistance to a unfolding serious medical event south of Rotorua.
A St John ambulance was initially despatched from Reporoa to the man's location in the Kaingaroa Forest around 3.30pm yesterday.
After the man's condition began to deteriorate they requested assistance from an intensive care paramedic who was flown out by chopper.
Meeting the ambulance by Rainbow Mountain, the 45-year-old Rotorua man was stabilised and then airlifted to Rotorua Hospital.
