Rotorua's Department of Conservation is looking for keen greenies to manage five of its regional campsites.
In a change of tack the department has decided to move away from using part-time wardens at local campsites and are looking for full-time camp managers to take over the day-to-day running of the camps, their maintenance and to collect fees from users.
Department of Conservation Rotorua Lakes area manager Nicki Douglas said they were looking for expressions of interest from around the community to fill the vacancies.
"Our approach is to provide more opportunities for others in the community to get involved in conservation. There are people out there who have the skills and capability to manage these camp grounds.
"We want to hear from people who have a real love for the environment and their community and can provide a service that people can enjoy."
She said the department was looking for managers at the Tarawera Outlet campsite in the Tarawera Scenic Reserve, the Hotwater Beach campsite in the Rotomahana Conservation Area on Lake Tarawera, the Ash Pit Rd campsite at Lake Rerewhakaaitu Recreational Reserve, the Brett Rd campsite at Lake Rerewhakaaitu and the Lake Okareka campsite.
The sites are standard DOC campsites that offer lakeside camping with access to walking tracks, fishing and water sports.
Successful applicants would earn a portion of the fees collected.
Ms Douglas said the offer was open to anyone who could work with the department and run the camps to its high standards.
"They could be ratepayer associations, business people, holiday camp owners, iwi groups or just private people with a love of the environment."
The closing date for expressions of interest is July 20. Contact Leilani Fraser or Ron Keyzer on (07) 349 8223 or email llfraser@doc.govt.nz or rkeyzer@doc.govt.nz.
