Rotorua Boys' High School has closed today due to a burst water main.

The school was alerted at 5.45am when there was no water at the Tai Mitchell Hostel.

Principal Chris Grinter said the call was made at 7.30am to close the school after the magnitude of the pipe failure was determined.

"Our property manager came in to investigate and found a mini geyser on our front lawn. We have been digging and have tracked it to a broken water main pipe. We have now procured the appropriate pipe to undergo the repair which could take most of the day.

"We have found alternative toilet facilities for the hostel with the use of the Scout Hall on Pererika St and we are most appreciative of their support."

The school will keep parents and caregivers updated via the mobile app and Facebook page over the course of the day.

Mr Grinter is confident the school will be open for business as usual tomorrow.
