Local adults who have worked hard to learn new skills will be recognised and celebrated for their efforts.

Literacy Rotorua will be celebrating the Festival of Adult Learning with those who have been learning there this year.

There will be a celebratory lunch and the presentation of certificates to acknowledge their learning.

It is being held on Wednesday, from 11.30am onwards, at the Rotorua Community Menz Shed building, 16 Te Ngae Rd.

Literacy Rotorua manager Mary Longson says it will also be an open time for anyone in the community who wants to go along and find out what Literacy Rotorua does or how they can be involved.

She says the Festival of Adult Learning is celebrated throughout New Zealand.

Mary says it is important to acknowledge adults who have put their hand up and make the commitment to improve their skills.

"It's a huge step for people to make and it gives them a lot of self-confidence."

Literacy Rotorua offers adults a chance to learn reading, writing, mathematics and basic computer skills, as well as providing assistance with learning the road code for their learner's licence.

The service is open to any adult in the community and is at no cost to the learner.
