"A lot of the training was around good footwork and fundamental stuff like stopping, and we did a bit of hitting towards the end. She is very well known for her big hits so that was awesome."
Mick Swagger, as she prefers to be known, won a world title with Team USA last year. She is a veteran of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby league, based in New York and the top roller derby league in the US.
After years of competing in top-level roller derby, Mick Swagger is now focusing on coaching.
Pearson said it was obvious she had a wealth of knowledge when it came to the sport and it gave the girls some confidence knowing they were on the right track in training.
"It was great to have someone of that skill level and knowledge. You really have got to take advantage when you have people of that calibre here in New Zealand."
Pearson said they were lucky to get her for a few hours as she was planning to come through Rotorua as part of a nationwide tour. About 20 people attended the training.
In simple terms, the object of roller derby is to score the most points by lapping opposing team members on an oval track.
The jammer is the point scorer and the other four team members are blockers. It is a contact sport and draws good crowds overseas.
The Sulphur City Steam Rollers' next match will be held in Napier in April, followed by the Slam Rock event in Rotorua in June.
