Verve and accomplished playing by this three sister ensemble of violin, cello and piano made a fine start for their ten concert tour through New Zealand.
Although youthful, their wide experience from appearing around the world gave a distinctive and mature sound to a performance which abounded with energy and commitment.
Beethoven gave a dominant role to the piano in his Piano Trio Opus 1 No.3 and Tina Kim took up the opportunity with relish. Her fluency at the keyboard was arresting and it gave a clarity to the twists and turns in the piece so typical of Beethoven's writing.
Like the Beethoven work, Gareth Farr's Ahi was full of surprises with wild mood swings between fiery passion and simple melodies, but at times its musical themes tended to become too disjointed.
Here as in the rest of the programme cellist Sally Kim's measured playing and rich tone gave a valuable underpinning to the whole Trinity Trio.
Dvorak's Dumky Trio has vividly contrasting sections in the spirit of Slavonic dances and songs and violinist Kim was in her element here as her strong bowing emphasized gypsy rhythms and earthy flavours.
