Rescued animals in Rotorua have new homes after being adopted during a special SPCA Adoption Day.
The Rotorua SPCA held the event at St Chad's on Saturday and about 100 people turned up to check out animals in need of adoption. Among the animals adopted were a rabbit, a puppy, two guinea pigs, kittens and cats.
Centre manager Nicola Martin said it was pleasing to see a small number of animals find homes.
"It was a big day. People came from all around Rotorua," she said. "We had a few animals adopted and two people signed up as volunteers. It was good to see people come and see the [animals] in a different environment."
Some hopeful people had been told go go home and discuss their prospective pets with partners and it was hoped they would return to adopt, Ms Martin said.
"We had lots of mothers and children having to go and get dad. It seems dad needs to be the one to make the decision on the cats," she said. "Hopefully, they will come back."
The off-site day was so successful, Ms Martin said similar events would be held in the future.
"We would like to have one in a rural setting because there are lots of families and farmers who can't get to town quite as often. Farm life is a pretty awesome life for an animal," she said.
While the animal shelter had not found owners for as many dogs as planned, staff were still pleased with how the event went, Ms Martin said.
If you'd like to check out the animals at the SPCA, the Old Taupo Rd centre is open daily 9am-4pm weekdays and 9am-2pm weekends.
