Heavy rain falls are expected west of Rotorua, the Western Bay of Plenty and Coromandel tonight and early tomorrow.

The Metservice says about 70 to 90mm may accumulate about the ranges.

People are advised that heavy rain can cause rivers to rise rapidly, with surface flooding possible in low lying areas.

There could be peak intensities 10 to 20mm/hr and possible thunderstorms early tomorrow morning.

Further showers are expected tomorrow night, some may be heavy.
