"Normally our fitness lets us down a little bit in the second half, so it's the really positive thing from this game is that they really stepped up in the second half."
The Baywide women's competition is three rounds old, with Rotoiti having a bye and two losses.
"We've got a lot of new girls and the side we are trying to rebuild had a noho - we spent the night on [Hinekura] Marae the night before and that was really good for the team bonding. Our culture's really growing and that was evident in the second half.'
Grant said the team have a lot of members who grew up in the Rotoiti area.
"On Saturday night we had a lot of their parents talking because a lot of the girls' parents and grandparents played for Rotoiti, so we have strong family connections and we are trying to build on that and all the new girls coming in, we are trying to get them involved and to understand what it means to play for Rotoiti under those colours."
With a squad of 30, Grant is not short of playing numbers.
"A lot of them are new to rugby. It's about half and half, those that have been around for a long time and the new players so we are just trying to mould them all together into one. It's really good for the game for us to have 30 players and to have to drop seven players per weekend is pretty good."
The club has a strong history of women's rugby and won the Baywide competition five times in a row in the 1990s.
"That was when our girls' parents played - although we do have some of those women still playing."
Grant said she decided to take to the field on Saturday to add some direction.
"I don't normally play, but it was just to create a structure and give them a bit of leadership on the field which is probably what we are lacking at times."
On Sunday Rotoiti play Te Whanau Apanui in Te Teko.
