So, what are you calling this year? Twenty-twelve or two-thousand and twelve?

It's not the most pressing problem troubling the world right now, but it would be nice for us all to be on the same page at some point this century.

For my money, twenty-twelve  is the better option.

It rolls off the tongue a lot more smoothly than the other, and as a former sub-editor I appreciate the economy of three syllables over five. (Last year it was five syllables versus seven).

Can you still see yourself saying two-thousand and twenty-two in 10 years?

Plus, we have decades' worth of precedent: until the millennium we named the years, for example, nineteen-ninety-five, not nineteen-hundred and ninety-five, or even worse, one-thousand nine-hundred and ninety-five.

There may not be a consensus any time soon. We still haven't agreed on what to call the previous decade, two years after it finished.
