Police have issued a warning to motorists to care on the roads due to a number of incidents where cars have slid due to ice.

A police spokesman said police had received calls about icy roads throughout the district but there had not been any road closures so far.

He said to check for warnings and closures people should go to www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic.

Police said motorists need to ensure they drive to the conditions and reduce their speed where necessary.

Police are urging particular caution on the State Highway 5 north of Rotorua and the Desert Road.

With the expected increase of vehicles on the road throughout today, motorists should look to plan their journey early and leave plenty of time to get to their destination.
