Rotorua police are cracking down on drivers using their cellphones.

Rotorua police area prevention manager Inspector Brendon Keenan said they wanted to warn people about the risks involved with driving while using a phone.

"We are going to be focussing on this, so it's a good time for people to stop and get into better habits."

It is against the law for drivers to make, receive or terminate a telephone call, to create, send or read a text message or email, to create, send or view a video message or communicate in a similar or any other way.

The penalty for using a cellphone while driving is an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.

"They really mitigated the risk of assault and serious assaults," Keenan said.

"There is some really good work happening in that space."
