Rotorua police made a "good catch" this week after information came in from a member of the public.
Area prevention manager Inspector Brendon Keenan said, during a vehicle stop on Sunday afternoon, they gained information which led to the arrest of one of the "most wanted".
"This was a good example of the community helping the police and police helping the community.
"The information we managed to find led to an important arrest."
Police maintain safety warnings despite drop in car thefts
After 21 cars were stolen in the previous week, this was a quieter week for police with five cars currently outstanding.
Keenan said, from a police perspective, it was good to see that deduction.
"People are becoming more educated, so it's important to keep the safety messages out there."
He said that meant locking your car, hiding valuables and keeping the car off the road where possible or investing in an alarm.
"We have also had significant arrests of key young people, which may have affected the numbers."

The police are currently seeking the following vehicles taken over the past week.
A 2015 domestic trailer, registration 2J845, taken from Oakland Place, Ngongotaha, on Tuesday.
A silver 1989 Nissan Navara, registration ZA2494, taken from Oregon Dr, Murupara, on Wednesday.
A white 1996 Nissan Skyline, registration BUE248, taken from Pohutukawa Dr, Owhata, on Thursday.
A silver 2005 Toyota Hiace, registration HWY564, taken from Oregon Dr, Murupara, on Sunday.
A red 2001 Nissan Pulsar, registration AEZ747, taken from Lake Rd, on Sunday.
A grey 2005 Nissan Serena, registration KQA446, taken from Rewarewa St, Owhata on Sunday.
