A Rotorua tradie pursuing his childhood dream of being a truck driver says the number of job offers he's received in the past six months would have been unheard of 18 months ago.

Nick Scanlon has been offered about five jobs since the beginning of the year.

"I've had to turn work down," he said.

"The best advice I could give to anyone currently looking for a job is grab every opportunity you get with both hands - whether it's learning new skills or taking on a new role, it will never hurt having extra skills under your belt."

He said those looking should also use every avenue available to find out about positions going.

"When I started looking at what was out there, I was looking on employment websites and in the paper but also I heard about a lot through word of mouth - let people know what you're looking for, you never know what will come back."

Mr Scanlon said he had two job offers to choose from when he accepted his current role doing part-time deliveries at Carters. Recently he was offered his dream job, truck driving for the same company full-time, in Tauranga.

"Truck driving has been my dream job since I was a kid, so even though it is in Tauranga it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down.

"I definitely think there are more jobs available around Rotorua but I also think if you are chasing your dream job, you need to be willing to look outside Rotorua," Mr Scanlon said.
