Phase one of the City Focus redesign is a step closer to completion with the apricot pillars being removed.
The latest demolition work caused unexpected road blockages on parts of Hinemoa and Tutanekai streets yesterday when a crane was brought in to help remove the heavy pillars facing Hinemoa St.
A Rotorua Lakes Council spokeswoman said a road management plan was submitted last week due to the size of the crane and weight of the pillars.
"The road detours were not pre-planned because it was not until the construction workers realised how heavy each pillar was - 42 tonne - that it was decided to bring a crane in."
"The closures were for safety and space reasons and were put in place for [yesterday] only. There are no other scheduled closures for the remainder of the first half of construction."
