Rotorua, Taupo and Whakatane have made it onto a new list - 101 Must-Dos for Kiwis.
The list is part of a $2 million domestic tourism campaign by the New Zealand Automobile Association aimed at getting Kiwis to holiday in New Zealand.
It features 101 activities that the AA reckons every New Zealander must experience.
Rafting the Kaituna River, luging down Mt Ngongotaha, swinging on the Skyswing, climbing Mt Tarawera, and visiting the city's geothermal sites and traditional Maori villages at Whakarewarewa all feature.
"Rotorua is ... home to some of our most iconic Kiwi experiences," AA Tourism general manager Peter Blackwell said.
"I think we have captured the essence of Rotorua ... If we haven't then we want locals to tell us what has been missed out."
New Zealanders have until early next year to vote for their top tourism activities by logging on to www.aatravel.co.nz.
Orakei Korako also features on the list, as does the Tongariro Crossing and Lake Taupo's water attractions including trout fishing. Mt Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro also feature along with White Island, off the coast of Whakatane.
Rotorua Destination Tourism Marketing manager Don Gunn said 58 per cent of the visitors to Rotorua were New Zealanders, mostly from Auckland. He said the Rotorua activities which made it on to the list were nominated by his staff. Meanwhile, Mr Gunn disputed a media report that domestic tourism in Rotorua was down by 33 per cent. "I have no idea where they got that [figure] from."
Domestic tourist numbers in Rotorua's commercial accommodation was up by 3.1 per cent on the previous year.
