I know, I know, who has the time or inclination to read an 83-page council document?

It's probably only those with a keen interest in council or city affairs or a vested interest in the contents, who have already read the Rotorua Lakes Council's Long-Term Plan 2018-28 Consultation Document.

But trust me, there is some really interesting stuff in there.

That includes, as we report today, details on the proposed refurbishment of the Rotorua Museum, as well as costs and details of other major projects planned for the district over the next 10 years.

A total of $481 million in capital expenditure planned, and there is something in there that will interest anyone. And there are bound to be things that provoke debate - which is exactly the point of the document and why everyone should take the time to at least have a flick through. Then, if you feel strongly enough, there are plenty of ways to have your say.

People love to moan about the council and its decisions, particularly when it comes to spending. Sometimes those criticisms are justified, sometimes not, sometimes it just depends where you are standing.

So here's the chance for everyone to have their say, now, before the decisions are final and it's too late.

Over the coming weeks we will be digging deeper into some of the main issues in the consultation document, which will hopefully inform and help get your thinking caps on.

As well as letting the council know what you think (details on page 3 today, or go to rotorualakescouncil.nz), we would also love to hear your thoughts on some of the proposals. Tell us what you agree with, what you disagree with and what you would like to see instead.

After all, this is your city, your district. How do you want it to look over the next 10 years and beyond? Email us at editor@dailypost.co.nz or drop us a note to 1143 Hinemoa St, remembering to take note of the letter guidelines.
