What a beautiful autumn weekend we have just had!

Yes, you can feel that snow has landed somewhere down the country, but when the sun comes out, we still flock to the great outdoors to soak it up.

We are spoilt for choice about where we can go to get active in this wonderful region and the 2014 Active NZ survey data showed that 89 per cent of Bay of Plenty people like to participate in recreational pursuits in outdoor spaces.

Can you blame us?

There are not many places in the world where people can say they have amazing beaches, waterfalls, lakes and rivers all within minutes of their own backyards.

Now we are heading into winter, it is time to get planning.

If the temperatures last week are anything to go by, it might be a cold one, so we need to think about the types of activities you and your family are going to enjoy to keep active during the cooler months.

Think about some of the things you have been meaning to do - by yourself or with your family - and use them as inspiration for your activities.

Write down some goals for the next six months: places to visit, sporting options and events, as well as fitness level required to enjoy these activities.

Break these goals down into monthly, weekly, daily goals (small steps).

Think about some incentives that come with you achieving these goals, both short and long term.

Once you have these goals, think about how you are motivated.

If you are someone who likes to talk, then text three friends in the weekend to meet at different times of the week to join you for activity.

It could be as easy as slotting the activity times into your weekly planner.

Don't forget to list activity options that can be done without weather being a barrier - there are many free options online to gather inspiration for an inside workout.

The main thing to remember is to do something challenging, but fun.

When all you want to do is hide from the cold, remember the last time you achieved one of your goals and the feeling - the smile - that it gave you.

We would love to hear the options that you come up with, so please visit our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/playinthebay/) and let us know how you get on.

If you're struggling for ideas, you can check out great local providers in our Get Involved Directory at www.sportbop.co.nz/get-involved/.
