'Old boys' take on RBHS sport roles

Rotorua Boys' High School has announced the appointment of two 'old boys' as the school's new directors of golf and basketball.

Director of golf Nicholas Davey is an NZPGA class A professional coach and a successful fulltime professional golfer.

His notable achievements include the honour of becoming the New Zealand Maori Golf Champion in 2000 and 2001.

He is a former Springfield senior club champion and a former representative for the Bay of Plenty.

Mr Davey is proud to be back at his home school to teach and grow the game of golf.

"It is my goal to see this school return to national and international honours in the near future," he said.

Theo Tait brings a wealth of experience and energy to his new role as director of basketball.

Active in the sport as both an athlete and a coach for more than 25 years, his involvement has taken him all over the globe in various roles.

His son attended Rotorua Boys' High School and during that time Mr Tait coached the school's junior A and senior A teams.

Mr Tait said it was that experience that fired his enthusiasm to pursue coaching further, and he moved to Auckland to take up a role with the Auckland Stars Franchise in the New Zealand Basketball League as the general manager and assistant coach.

"I am honoured to be able to share my experiences with the young men of Rotorua Boys' High School and to help develop skills towards their aspirations in the sport of basketball."

Rotorua Boys' High School principal Chris Grinter said co-curricular activities were really important for their school as they gave it a significant point of difference.

"It is through co-curricular activities that many of the skills that young people need to learn these days can best be taught.

"I take this opportunity to welcome back these two 'old boys' of our school who have achieved at the national level in golf and basketball respectively," Mr Grinter said.
