Ngati Pikiao has 8000-plus affiliates

An iwi profile has been released for Ngati Pikiao, based on last year's Census.

More than 8000 Maori affiliate to Ngati Pikiao as their iwi, according to the latest Census figures.

The Te Arawa tribe has 4341 women (54 per cent) and 3663 men (46 per cent), with about 27 per cent identifying Ngati Pikiao as their sole iwi affiliation.

Statistics New Zealand's Census iwi profiles have been released which give a breakdown of the numbers of members living in each region throughout the country as well as information about language, education, income and housing.

There are 99 individual iwi profiles and 13 natural iwi grouping profiles.

According to the 2013 Census for Ngati Pikiao:

• The median age was 24.4 years.

• 27.3 per cent identified Ngati Pikiao as their sole iwi affiliation, while 72.6 per cent also affiliated with other iwi.

• 29.1 per cent could hold a conversation about everyday things in te reo Maori.

For people aged 15 years and over affiliating with Ngati Pikiao and living in New Zealand on March 5, 2013:

• 45.1 per cent stated that they had never been a regular smoker.

• 70.9 per cent held a formal qualification.

• The median income was $22,600.

• Te Maori will run a Statistics Census profile each week for all Te Arawa iwi.
