Rotorua's TreeWalk is to be officially blessed by Ngati Whakaue this weekend.

Rotorua's new tourism venture the Redwoods Treewalk will be officially blessed this weekend.

The new Treewalk , which takes users 12m above the ground as they walk through Tokorangi Forest (Redwoods), will be blessed by Ngati Whakaue mana whenua at 9am on Saturday.

Invited guests will then be taken on a preview of the new walk before it opens to the public at a yet to be decided date early in the new year.

The new venture is being run by German couple Alexander Schmid and his wife Andrea and has taken almost two years to complete.

The Rotorua Lakes Council granted a licence to the couple to run the businessMr Schmid, who is Treewalk general manager, said they set up the business because The Redwoods were iconic.

"The Redwoods Grove is already ranked one of the must do attractions in New Zealand. The Treewalk will offer the already 300,000 plus visitors enjoying the forest another great experience."

He said he had been working on the business for the past six years and he already operates similar eco-tourism projects in Europe.

Redwoods Treewalk uses ecologically friendly engineering and is suspended from the 100-year-old majestic redwoods.

Featuring a series of suspension bridges and living decks, it is elevated from 6m to 12m at its highest point. Designed for use without harnesses or protective gear, it is suitable for all ages.

The only pre-requisite is that all users must be able to walk the entire 553m.

There are 23 bridge sections connected to 22 living decks and it will take walkers about 30 minutes to complete.

He said customers must have a reasonable level of fitness and be able to walk unaided, including young children. Children cannot be carried at any stage along the walk. There is a maximum weight of 120kgs for any individual.

There is an opening offer of $25 per adult, $15 per child (5 to 14 years) and a family deal of $79 (two adults and up to three children). The special will run through the summer.

The Treewalk will open from 8.30am until about 6pm over summer and will operate in the rain but not in high winds, thunder or lightning storms.

"The forest ambience and colours are even more stunning in the wet, so this is a very good wet weather activity."

He said the next stage will include a "Tree Top" experience. The future Redwoods TreeTop experience will be up to 45m high and will include a harnessed bridge experience, rope and zip connections and unique descent options.

This will be a two-hour guided experience targeting adventure seekers.
