Eight hundred more speeding tickets were issued in Rotorua last December and January than the year before - costing summer drivers dearly.
Speed cameras caught 3141 motorists and issued tickets while police officers wrote 1165 tickets for a total cost of $1,376,850.
The jump from 3478 tickets in 2012/13 to 4306 last year is largely a result of lowering the speed threshold to 4km/h over the limit rather than the previous tolerance for up to 10km/h, officials believe.
Bay of Plenty road policing manager Inspector Kevin Taylor said he had no reason to believe the number of tickets issued would be different from last summer, though he thought drivers were starting to understand the need to reduce their speeds.
"The Bay's mean speeds, both urban and rural, are higher than the national average so that tells us on average people are still driving too fast, but it's trending in the right direction," he said.
