Rotorua Intermediate's Mitchell Nahu-French originally decided to trial for the Rotorua Intermediate netball team as a goof.
It was term one, and with news his fellow basketballers had instead opted to play rugby league at the Aims Games this year, Nahu-French decided it would be a giggle to give the other round-ball code a go.
As it turns out, the joke was on him - he impressed at goalkeep during the trials and won selection as the only boy in the school's top team.
He was laughing at Mount Maunganui's Blake Park on Monday, helping his school to an impressive early 49-11 victory as part of a strong team effort.
"The girls have a basketball team for Aims but all the boys just went to league, so I joined netball," he said.
