A bill to give Rotorua people choice of shopping on Easter Sunday has been introduced to Parliament and Rotorua MP Todd McClay is calling on Labour and New Zealand First MPs to put party politics aside and support the measure.
Mr McClay says there is strong support locally for the playing field to be levelled in favour of Rotorua.
"Easter is one of our busiest weekends, and its old fashioned and outdated that Taupo and Queenstown can open but Rotorua can't," Mr McClay said.
Mr McClay has long lobbied for a change of law which finally looks like it will happen.
"This is the first time a Government bill has been presented to back Rotorua over Easter weekend opening hours. That means that the numbers are there to change the law but I think it would be good if other parties showed their support for Rotorua retailers, tourist attractions and shoppers and also voted in favour of this change," Mr McClay said.
