After A long lay off with injury, Rotorua rider Sam Shaw has surprised himself by winning the main mountain bike event at the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.
A strong field turned out for the Contact Huka XL 85km elite mountain bike race on Saturday, including Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sam Gaze.
Shaw said Gaze pulled out of the race about 30km or 40km into the event, and he managed to get ahead and hold on to the lead, finishing in 3h 55m 45s.
"I'm still not really believing it," Shaw said.
"I haven't really been riding since last summer. I broke my wrist in January and had most of the winter off the bike."
