The region is on thunderstorm watch again today after last night's spectacular display around Rotorua.

MetService said scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms were expected around central parts of the North Island this afternoon and evening including inland parts of the Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and Taupo.

Some could be severe, producing localised downpours of 25 to 40mm per hour.

Some parts of Rotorua were treated to a short but impressive display of thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and even hail yesterday evening.
