A Latin dance-inspired programme is becoming an addictive exercise of choice for many Rotorua people wanting to get fit.
Instructor Jacque Webber said Zumba was increasing in popularity in the city with between 140-160 people regularly taking classes four nights a week at either Westbrook or Rotorua Primary School.
About 100 people took part in Rotorua's first Zumba Party held at Westbrook School on Saturday afternoon.
"The feedback we have been getting from people is all positive," said Ms Webber.
"People have been saying they have never before had a workout where they have worked up such a sweat ... People are really addicted to it."
Ms Webber described Zumba as high impact. "It's just a fun way to do exercise through dance. You really get into the beat of the music and do a great workout."
Saturday's Zumba Party was aimed at introducing people to the programme.
"What was great was seeing the kids having fun and playing, while their parents got a good workout," she said.
Rotorua's next Zumba Party will be on March 15 at Westbrook School and will be a fundraiser for the Cancer Society's Relay for Life, being held at the International Stadium on March 12 and 13.
Zumba classes are also held for the elderly and people with disabilities.
