"We'd already set a date for the wedding, and this change in our lives made us look back and think about where we started," she said.
"And we'd been thinking about putting together a stripped back acoustic show.
"So it fitted together, it felt right."
The Rotorua show will be the first time Ms Moon has performed professionally in her home town, and she is looking forward to it.
"I feel more excited than I ever have since I left. Sometimes it's hard to find the love for your home town, with memories of the awkward teen years and all, but it'll be great to show my friends where I'm from and share something in my home space that's completely me," she said.
Winter Moon is starting to make waves in the Australian music scene, even coming to the attention of Australian national radio station Triple J.
"We're getting a really good reaction now. There are a lot of good bands around in Melbourne - we've just been lucky to find amazingly talented people to perform and play great shows with.
"It's awesome to be getting good reviews and packing out some of Melbourne's best music venues," Ms Moon said.
The band has been invited to take a residency at The Toff in Town, a key venue in the Melbourne music scene.
"It's a fairly big deal - who's playing at the Toff gets covered by all the music magazines. It'll bring a lot attention and it's a good way for people to see our name and build our profile," Ms Moon said.
Winter Moon are playing upstairs at 1150 Tutanekai St next Saturday from 8pm. Tickets are $8 on the door, or $5 pre-sale from Fat Dog cafe and bar.
