Man who died outside Parliament was from Rotorua

A man injured outside Parliament on Thursday last week has been named as Rotorua man Zdenek (Sid) Hanzlik.

The 60-year-old Czech-born man died in hospital after an incident on Parliament grounds.

Police released Hanzlik's name today.

Hanzlik's death has been referred to the coroner and police said they could not make any further comment.

Funeral details have not been announced but a friend has placed a death notice in today's Rotorua Daily Post that said "Good mate. Dear friend. Will miss you. RIP."

Hanzlik ran a mechanic's business from Sunset Rd in Rotorua called F.H. Autoservice.

A man who worked at a neighbouring business described him as "eccentric'".

"Sid was known as a bit of an eccentric person but everyone who knew him and liked him understood that he was actually a really intelligent guy, not only in his trade as a mechanic but also his understanding of world issues due to his background growing up in the Czech Republic as it changed from a communist country."

Hanzlik had previously appeared in media in 2010 relating to a dispute over payment of a car he had worked on while running a business in Taranaki.

In that article, it said Hanzlik emigrated to Britain in 1987, was a qualified marine engineer and mechanic, and gained New Zealand residency in 1991.
