A man has been badly burned while burning rubbish in Murupara.

The Rotorua-based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Murupara at 3.30pm today where the 24-year-old man had been burning rubbish using petrol.

It ignited resulting in bad burns to his leg, hands and torso.

He was treated by St John paramedics at the scene before being driven to where the helicopter could land at a school field.

Further treatment was required before the man was flown to Waikato Hospital.
