A man has appeared in the Whakatane District Court charged with the murder of an Opotiki woman on Monday.
The 27-year-old man has been granted interim name suppression by Judge Louis Bidois.
The identity of the woman who died was also suppressed.
The man appeared in a blue boiler suit and had a visible injury above his eye.
He was represented by Gene Tomlinson.
Judge Bidois remanded the man to reappear in the High Court at Tauranga on March 14. Name suppression for both is to continue until then.
Earlier police released a statement saying a man had been charged with murder following an arrest in Te Kaha.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen said in the statement police were pleased to have made the arrest so quickly and hoped it would help the whanau and friends of the victim in some way.
The police investigation is continuing in Opotiki and Te Kaha.
"We'd like to extend a big thank you to the Opotiki and Te Kaha communities for providing information and support during this tragic investigation."
The woman was found dead at a residential property near Opotiki's CBD about 1.15pm on Monday.
